Trivia is a collection some unimportant items, facts, or information. Sometimes, the word is used for knowledge that is good if one possesses but the knowledge is not essential. For example, this may refer to the knowledge regarding pop culture. It is good if one knows about pop culture but it is not necessary that everyone should have this type of knowledge.
Trivia are regarded as unimportant or not so important facts that almost everyone have stored at the back of their mind and they are useful while having conversation or they are popular items for many games, contests and quizzes. In the late 19th century, the expression was used for answering quiz questions. Usually it consists of series of questions that when asked can make an individual get confused but in reality, these quiz questions are very familiar.
Trivia consists of logic, grammar, and persuasive speech, which are the basics of education and lay the foundation of higher education. But it is not true if it is said that these are only of interest to undergraduates as many graduates and professionals as well are familiar with this expression which is generally applied to information or knowledge that is useful for answering quizzes and contest questions.
The basic concept of trivia is to provide entertainment and a sense of familiarity which would initially stun the listener but as soon as the answer is revealed it sound all too familiar. The collective study of trivia is called ‘spermology” that means “collection of seeds”. In 1960, the word became quite popular with the help of Columbia University students Ed Goodgold and Dan Carlinsky. They created one of the earliest inter-collegiate quiz bowls comprising of questions filled with unimportant facts.
The formats that evolve around trivia are the quiz format and the quiz bowls format. In the 60’s college students began to play around questions and answers concerning their popular culture. Many contests and shows were formulized on the basis of this expression. There are numerous books by various authors related to this subject matter. Furthermore, nowadays, there are many programs that are shown on TV and media underlying this expression.
Besides TV and media, quizbowl trivia format is very popular on the level of high school, colleges, and universities. The trivial quizzes and shows are regarded as the popular pass time activity for many individuals belonging to different age groups. There are many TV games shows and contests that are based on the trivial questions and to attract the viewers as well as the contestants a certain amount of prize money is also given to the winner.
Moreover, as people socialize with each other, it has become a culture to have information or knowledge about popular culture, and a person who does not have any knowledge sometimes feel embarrassed among friends. Previously, it was assumed that this is a popular form of education among undergraduates only, but due to media, almost every individual belonging to different age groups are seemingly interested in gaining knowledge about the popular culture.
